CAUSE NO. 73

ORDER NO. 73-1

APPEARANCES:

F. J. Kretschmer, Attorney - for the Stansbury Oil Company

B. W. Berthelot - for the Phillips Petroleum Company

Sam Freeman, Assistant Attorney General, and

A. J. Jersin, Deputy Director - for the Commission

REPORT OF THE COMMISSION

This cause came on for hearing before the Commission on August 24, 1955, at 2:00 p.m., in Room 704 State Capitol Annex, Denver, Colorado, after publication of Notice of Hearing as required by law, on the application of the Stansbury Oil Company for an order from the Commission to permit multiple zone completion of its Cordes-Oberlander No. 1 well, located in the Bent's Fort Field, Bent County, Colorado.

FINDINGS

The Commission finds as follows:

1.      That due notice of the time, place and purpose of the hearing has been given in all respects as required by law.

2.      That the Commission has jurisdiction over the subject matter embraced in said Notice, and of the parties interested therein, and jurisdiction to promulgate the hereinafter prescribed order.

3.      That applicant is the owner of oil and gas leases which cover, among other lands, the Southwest Quarter of the Southwest Quarter (SW/4 SW/4) of Section Twenty-one (21), Township Twenty-one (21) South, Range Fifty-one (51) West of the 6th P.M., in Bent County, Colorado, and that it has drilled its Cordes-Oberlander No. 1 well in above described tract, and that said well is now producing from the Atoka sand formation.

4. That in the drilling of said well, the top of the oil zone in the Atoka sand formation was encountered at a depth of approximately Four Thousand Six Hundred Nineteen (4619) feet, and the top of the gas zone of the Keys sand formation was encountered at a depth of approximately Five Thousand Two Hundred Eight (5208) feet, and that said well is now producing from the Atoka sand formation through casing perforations at a depth of Four Thousand Six Hundred Nineteen feet to Four Thousand Six Hundred Thirty-one feet (4619’ to 4631’); that the Keys sand formation has been tested at the interval of Five Thousand Two Hundred Eight (5208) feet and Five Thousand Two Hundred Twenty-eight (5228) feet; and that said well is now capable of producing from both the Atoka sand formation and the Keys sand formation.

5.      That all available geological and engineering data concerning the Cordes-Oberlander No. 1 well indicate that said well can have multiple zone completion by perforating at the above two intervals, and then setting packers above each of said perforated zones to separate the two, and thereafter running a string of tubing through said packers, and then to allow the oil from the Atoka sand formation to be produced through the tubing, and the gas from the Keys sand formation to be produced through the casing, either or both, independently and without any commingling.

6.      That the granting of petitioner's application, and the completion and production of said well in the manner hereinabove described will not result in waste, and that no damage will result to either formation because of such multiple zone completion.

ORDER

NOW, THEREFORE, IT IS ORDERED, that the following rules and regulations shall apply hereafter to the Cordes-Oberlander No. 1 well located in the Center of the Southwest Quarter of the Southwest Quarter (C SW/4 SW/4 of Section Twenty-one (21), Township Twenty-one (21) South, Range Fifty-one (51)West of the 6th P.M., Bent County, Colorado, in addition to other applicable rules and regulations and orders of this Commission, if any, heretofore adopted and not in conflict herewith.

Rule 1.    That authority is hereby granted applicant, the Stansbury Oil Company, for multiple zone completion of its said Cordes-Oberlander No. 1 well by perforating the casing opposite the Atoka sand formation between the approximate depths of Four Thousand Six Hundred Nineteen feet and Four Thousand Six Hundred Thirty-one feet (4619’-4631’), and then setting packers above each of said perforated zones to separate the two, and thereafter running a string of tubing through said packers; and to permit the oil from the Atoka sand formation to be produced through the tubing, and the gas from the Keys sand formation to be produced through the casing, either or both, independently and without any commingling.

Rule 2.    That similar multiple zone completions with independent production from more than one formation in one well bore in other wells in the Bent’s Fort Field may be approved and authorized by the Commission upon application to said Commission, as provided by the rules and regulations of this Commission.

IT IS FURTHER ORDERED, that the Commission expressly reserves its right, after notice and hearing, to alter, amend, or repeal stay and/or all of the above rules and regulations.

ORDERED this 24th day of August, 1955.
