Complaint Issue
Issue:     WATER WELL Assigned To:    John Axelson Status:     Resolved     5/19/2011
Description: Surface owner requested baseline sample from water well (reference well permit #256584). Concerned about the Pawnee 2-16-1 (API 123-31432) located approx 0.4-miles west.
Resolution: COGCC concludes that the original report of elevated As, Cd, Pb and Se in the post-fracture sample collected on April 13, 2011, was incorrect based on the following factors: The re-analysis of the post-fracture water sample collected on April 13, 2011, did not contain detectable concentrations of dissolved As, Cd, Pb or Se; The second post-fracture sample collected on April 28, 2011, for analysis of total and dissolved metals, as analyzed by both Test America and Accutest, did not contain detectable concentrations of the four metals; Results for the other nine metals analyzed for total and dissolved concentrations were consistent between sampling events. When the results of the baseline sample and the post-fracture sample are compared, concentrations of the other water quality parameters were consistent and did not indicate any significant change in the water quality between the sampling events. Finally, there was no indication during the fracture stimulation operations that any spills, releases, or other problems had occurred that would lead to contamination of the Fox-Hills Aquifer in the vicinity of your residence. Based on these conclusions, COGCC finds that there has been no impact to groundwater quality in the vicinity of your residence related to oil & gas operations at the Pawnee 2-16-1. As a result your complaint (COGCC #200300876) is closed with this letter.

Resampled Burkhart water well for metals. Collected sample out of the same hose and also sampled directly from tap of same spigot used for all previous samples. Sample was sent to Test America for total and dissolved metals analysis. Duplicate sample also sent to Accutest. Laboratory results for both samples were non-detect for As, Pb, Cd & Se. All other metals results were consistent with previous reports.

Received results of post-frac water sample from Test America. As, Pb, Cd & Se were elevated. All other analyzed constituents were consistent with baseline results. Requested Test America to re-analyze remaining sample volume for dissolved metals. Received report dated April 29, 2011. All four metals were non-detect.

Collected post-frac sample from Burkhart water well. Water characteristics were the same as last time - clear, no odor, no sheen, no sediment accumulated in purge bucket. Delivered samples to Test America for same list of organic and inorganic analyses performed on last sample. Results pending.

Response or Details
Letter report with summary of water quality results was mailed to the Burkharts. Baseline sample results were consistent with other groundwater samples collected by COGCC in northern Weld County. No indication of any historical impacts or impacts related to recent oil & gas activity. Burkharts have requested another sample be collected after fracture stimulation at the Pawnee 2-16-1 (API 123-31432). COGCC monitored frac operations between 3/15/11 and 3/25/11. No spills were observed or any problems noted that would have resulted in a release that impacted shallow groundwater. Reference field inspection reports document #s: 200304598, 200306588, 200304579, 200304573, 200304578, 200305752, 200305134 and 200305135. Post frac water well sample pending.

Collected water sample from Burkhart water well (reference DWR Permit #256584) for baseline. Wellhead located at N 40.74209, W104.88221. Used faucet on south side of barn for sample collection. Ran water @ approx. 6.75-gal/min for 45-min prior to sample collection. Water was clear, no odor, slight effervescence. Field screened bucket headspace during purging - no methane detected. No change in water observed during purging and no sediment accumulated in purge bucket. Delivered sample to Test America for analysis of organic and inorganic constituents via chain-of-custody #142575 on 3/17/11.
