Complaint Issue
Issue:     WATER WELL Assigned To:    Robert Chesson Status:     Resolved     11/15/2010
Description: Complainant alleges impact to water well from nearby oil & gas operations. First noticed a change to water on 7/4/10. Described the water as bubbling more than usual and smells like gas. Also said there was a sheen on water and the smell was more noticeable when running hot water. Reported possible work-over or frac job on nearby oil & gas well operated by Kerr McGee approx 1000-ft SE of residence.
Resolution: Water and gas sampling from water well show no O&G impacts. Methane gas in water well is natural biogenic in origin. Letter included suggested mitigation actions.

Response or Details
Collected sample from the Pointer domestic water well (DWR Permit #228963). Purge water was effervescing vigorously. Purge water was very light gray with no unusual odor or hydrocarbon sheen observed. No sediment accumulated during purging. Methane detected with meter held over purge bucket @ 7% LEL. Checked water at kitchen sink in residence detected no unusual odor or sheen and no methane or H2S w/meter. Observed water filter from residence water system had slight build up of very fine sediment - nothing unusual. Collected sample @ 09:40 and delivered to Empact Analytical in Brighton, CO for gas composition. Empact analyzed sample same day and results indicate only methane with trace of ethane in water. Also, sent sample to Isotech Laboratories in Champaign, IL for composition and isotopic analysis. Water sample also submitted to Test America in Arvada, CO for analysis of organic and inorganic constituents. Additional results pending. Performed inspections at five surrounding oil & gas wells. Nothing observed that would indicate a threat to shallow groundwater.
